Not surprisingly, the same calls for Electoral Reform are sounding in the UK as they are here in Canada. In the last UK General Election the Conservatives won a resounding majority with ~44% of the popular vote. Less than 50% of the vote being rewarded with 100% of the power.
Linked below is an interesting article by Owen Winter, Co-Founder and Director of Make Votes Matter. It focuses on how the First Past the Post system producing disproportionate results impacts younger voters. It dampens enthusiasm and curtails turn-out of young voters (a huge cohort) when their concerns are not reflected in the results. This sentiment hit home because it’s how I felt at that age, watching governments getting elected with more votes against than for but receiving the wealth of power.
