Check out this great article from The Conversation about how New Zealand faced a similar electoral situation as Canada. They went on to form an Electoral Commission and transitioned to MMPR in 1983. They’re government is now far more representative of the electorate’s will and diverse among ethnic, cultural, age, and gender demographics than it was previously.
